Omis is situated at the mouth of the river Cetina, and from the very beginnings of the development represented a strategic point of great importance. With its impressive location, where the mountain range separated the river Cetina, and shortly afterwards put into the sea, Omiš is unique in the world. Because of this it is possible for the whole handful of interesting sites in the city itself.
A number of tourists attracted the beautiful sand and pebble beaches and accommodation are mainly in private homes and camps.
There are historical records of battles between pirates from Omis and invaders Turks, Venetians and French. Two fortresses were still above the rest of the city, Mirabela (at an altitude of 245 meters) from the 13th century and fortress Starigrad (Fortica).
